Google Nexus phones reportedly susceptible to SMS attacks

Google's latest Nexus smartphones are vulnerable to an attack in which someone could force the phones to reboot or lose their network connection by sending them a large number of a certain kind of SMS message, according to PC World.
Bogdan Alecu, a system administrator at Dutch IT services company Levi9, reportedly found that the vulnerability can occur when an attacker sends around 30 so-called Flash SMS messages -- messages that appear immediately on the phone's screen upon arrival -- to the Galaxy Nexus, the Nexus 4, or the Nexus 5. If the messages aren't promptly dismissed, it opens the phones up for attack. Alecu plans to present his findings Friday at the DefCamp security conference in Bucharest, Romania.
One of the problems that Nexus users face is that they won't be automatically alerted with an audio tone when a Flash SMS message is received, which could allow an attacker to send a lot of them quickly before they're noticed or dismissed, PC World reports.
According to Alecu, the SMS overload can result in several issues, including the phone rebooting, which is the most likely outcome. In that case, if a PIN is required to unlock the SIM card, the phone won't connect to the network after rebooting. Another problem that can occur is that the messaging app crashes, but the system then automatically restarts it.
Alecu told PC World that while the issue appears to affect the latest Nexus smartphones running Android versions Ice Cream Sandwich through KitKat, it hasn't worked on other phones he's tested.
We've reached out to Google for comment on how the company plans to address the issue and will update this post when we learn more. Alecu told PC World that he reported the issue to Google, but it hasn't yet been addressed.

For Black Friday, Apple favors gift cards over discounts

Don't go to Apple's online and retail stores expecting to see the iPad maker's traditional Black Friday discounts. This year, Apple has thrown in a bit of twist to its holiday deals.
Today Apple is offering gift cards of up to $150 when you purchase a gadget through its US online and retails outlets. This is a divergence from years past, when it would discount the products themselves.
If you pick up a new iPad Mini or iPad 2, expect to get a $50 Apple Store gift card. TheiPad Air is worthy of a $75 gift card. And if you buy a new iMac, MacBook Pro, orMacBook Air, you can score a $150 gift card.
That's still less than what some other retail outlets are offering. Target, for instance, istouting an iPad Air for $479 (it's usually $499) with a $100 gift card to its stores. That's an in-store only offer. And atWalmart, you can get the iPhone 5S for $189 (its original price is $199) and the iPhone 5C (typically $99) for $45 with a two-year contract. After signing the contract, you'll get a $75 Walmart gift card.
Apple appears to be going the usual route in Europe, by offering standard discounts on its hardware as opposed to the gift cards. The gift cards offering is only in Apple's US and Australian online and retail stores.
We've reached out to Apple for comment on the Black Friday changes and will update this post when we hear back.

BlackBerry Inks Deal With Micromax, Spice Over BBM

New Delhi: After introducing popular BBM to Android and iOS users, BlackBerry said it will partner handset makers from India, like Micromax, Spice and Zen, other nations to pre-install the popular messaging app on their smartphones.

With the BBM app coming pre-installed, users can directly engage with other BBM users without having to download the app or incurring download charges.

"BBM will soon come preinstalled on a variety of Android-based smartphones from leading OEMs across Africa, India, Indonesia, Latin America and the Middle East," BlackBerry said in a statement.

Beginning next month, Android smartphones from Be, Brightstar, Celkon, EVERCOSS, IMO, Micromax, Mito, Snexian, Spice, TECNO, TiPhone and Zen will include BBM preinstalled, it added.

BBM will continue to be available as a free download from Android app stores, including Google Play.

"It is clear that smartphone customers see BBM as a must have app for active conversations. The uptake we have seen for BBM since the launch on Android and iPhone is amazing," BlackBerry Executive Vice President (BBM) Andrew Bocking said.

BBM is already available pre-loaded on Micromax's Canvas Turbo and will now be preloaded in the entire forthcoming range of Canvas phones.

BlackBerry today also launched its BBM Channels, which will allow brands to engage with people and communities.

Samsung's marketing splurge doesn't always bring bang-for-buck

(Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co(005930.KS) is expected to spend around $14 billion - more than Iceland's GDP - on advertising and marketing this year, but it doesn't always get value for money.
The outlay buys the South Korean technology giant publicity in TV and cinema ads, on billboards, and at sports and arts events from the Sydney Opera House to New York's Radio City Music Hall. Google Inc (GOOG.O) spent less on buying Motorola's handset business.
And Samsung, which has a market value of $227 billion, has made no secret of keeping up its aggressive marketing and promotion splurge as it seeks to make its brand as aspirational as Apple Inc's (AAPL.O). But the money it's spending doesn't always bring the desired result.
Last month, a Samsung-sponsored short-film contest finale at the Sydney Opera House received poor reviews for blatant product placement in a series of 'behind the scenes' videos. In Britain, viewers panned a product placement deal with ITV's popular X-Factor talent show. "Is this a singing competition or an extended Samsung advert?" asked Twitter user Ryan Browne.
Earlier this year, Samsung's New York launch of its latest top-of-the-range Galaxy smartphone came under fire for being sexist, portraying giggling women chatting about jewelery and nail polish while the men discussed the new phone, and the company's new fridge and washing machine launch in South Africa drew similar complaints as it featured swim-suit dancers.
"Samsung's marketing is too much focused on projecting an image they aspire to: being innovative and ahead of the pack," said Oh Jung-suk, associate professor at the business school of Seoul National University. "They are failing to efficiently bridge the gap between the aspiration and how consumers actually respond to the campaign. It's got to be more aligned."
Samsung spends a bigger chunk of its annual revenue on advertising and promotion than any other of the world's top-20 companies by sales - 5.4 percent, according to Thomson Reuters data. Apple spends just 0.6 percent, and General Motors (GM.N) 3.5 percent.
"When your brand doesn't have a clear identity, as is the case with Samsung, to keep spending is probably the best strategy," said Moon Ji-hun, head of brand consultant Interbrand's Korean operation. "But maintaining marketing spend at that level in the longer term wouldn't bring much more benefit. No one can beat Samsung in terms of (ad) presence, and I doubt whether keeping investing at this level is effective."
In a statement to Reuters, Samsung said it will "continue to leverage our brand power to maintain growth momentum, while focusing on optimizing the efficiency of our marketing activities," reiterating recent comments by its co-CEO.
"Our product innovation and marketing strategy have made Samsung the world's most preferred smartphone brand," J.K. Shin, who also heads the group's mobile business, told investors recently. "Now we'll move from the most preferred brand to become one of the world's leading aspirational brands."
INNOVATING, NOT FOLLOWING
Samsung's 'Next Big Thing,' and 'It's Time to Change' marketing campaigns stress that its products are cutting-edge, and even trumpet its technology 'world firsts' before they're ready for prime time, such as curved smartphones, available only in South Korea, and curved TVs that cost nearly $10,000.
For a company long seen as a follower, this is now a big sell on it being an innovator.
But, while Samsung has become the world's biggest advertiser, spending $4.3 billion on ads alone last year, its global brand value of $39.6 billion is less than half that of Apple, which spent only $1 billion on advertising, according to Interbrand and ad researcher Ad Age.
To be sure, Samsung has a more diverse range of mobile products, which along with its chips and household appliance businesses need more marketing across different target audiences. But the heavy marketing spend suggests a need to convince consumers that it belongs at the top. Apple can afford to spend less as it already has that brand recognition, and cachet.
"The stronger, more differentiated the product, the less it needs to be propped up by advertising," said Horace Dediu, founder of independent research firm Asymco and a former Nokia business development manager, referring to Apple's ad spend.
Defending its marketing budget, Samsung can point to its lead in the global smartphone market - it sells one in every three smartphones and has more than double Apple's market share. The Korean group's savvy adverts mocking Apple devotees, and heavy investment in distribution channels have strengthened its Galaxy mobile brand.
"The Galaxy brand has established itself, and the Samsung brand is now much stronger than Android or any of the other OEM brands, except Apple," said Benedict Evans, an independent technology and media consultant in London. "The underlying problem is that Samsung has established itself as a dependable quality brand, not a differentiated or premium quality product, so it does best where it's not competing directly with Apple."
Samsung works with a number of advertising agencies, including Publicis Groupe (PUBP.PA), Interpublic Group (IPG.N), and MDC Partners (MDZa.TO) (MDCA.O).
IN LOW GEAR
Samsung's latest marketing splash has been on its Galaxy Gear smartwatch, which has been almost universally panned by reviewers. The device has been aggressively marketed through adverts and collaboration with fashion shows - yet only 800,000 Gears have been shipped since its launch two months ago. Compare that to the more than 5 million Note 3 smartphones that have been shipped since its late-September launch, and it suggests fewer than a fifth of the Note buyers are also buying the accessory device.
Undeterred, Samsung has vowed more Gear promotions for the crucial year-end holiday season as it seeks to lead the wearable computer market and prove its innovation credentials.
"Probably Samsung knows better than anyone that Gear will not become a mainstream product. Still, they are trying to convey the message that 'we are first with such technology,' which they hope will help build their brand as an advanced technology firm," said Interbrand's Moon.
A deep-pocketed Samsung - it earned operating profit of $9.6 billion in the third quarter alone - is still pushing the envelope to win over consumers.

This month, the big-spending official sponsor of the past eight Winter and Summer Olympics launched a fantasy-inspired soccer marketing campaign ahead of the mid-2014 World Cup in Brazil - selecting 11 of the world's top players, including Argentine striker Lionel Messi, for a virtual match to save Earth from aliens - with the help of Galaxy devices.

Nokia Planning A Dual-SIM Windows Phone Handset Codenamed Moneypenny

While Nokia's Lumia 520 is doing great in India, it's still off the radar of many value buyers due to the lack of dual-SIM support. Yes, no matter how annoying it is to operate a dual-SIM handset, for us Indians, it is always "more the merrier". Cluttered WP interface is the last thing Microsoft wants, however, the software giant now has no option but to offer what people are looking for.
Nokia has expertise in dual-SIM hardware, but it was held back only because of Windows Phone software. Now if @evleaks is to be believed, the Finns are planning to unveil a dual-SIM handset codenamed "Moneypenny" built on the upcoming iteration of Windows Phone platform "Blue" (a.k.a. 8.1).
There's no word on when the device will go official, but we expect this to happen next year somewhere around February 2014. There's a high chance that this upcoming phone will fall under Lumia 5xx or 6xx series. With Lumia 525 and 625 already in existence, we expect the phone to be called something like Lumia 522 or maybe Lumia 622.

Acer to sell touch Chromebook at fraction of Google Pixel price

Since February, when Google launched its Chromebook Pixel, there's been just one option for those seeking a Chromebook with a touch screen. It came with a high-resolution screen -- and a high price tag: $1,299.
On Tuesday, however, Acer announced a touch screen Chromebook option that's less than a quarter of the price. The latest in its new C720P Chromebook series comes with a touch screen and will go on sale early next month at Amazon, Best Buy, and the Acer Store for just $300.
It features a Haswell-based Intel Celeron processor and an 11.6-inch HD LED back-lit display to take advantage of the Chrome interface. It also boasts "great multi-tasking performance," up to 7.5 hours of battery life, 32GB of flash storage, and a 7-second boot-up. It measures 0.78-inches and weighs 2.98 pounds.
Of course, the release of the bargain touch-screen Chromebook is timed perfectly for the shopping season.
"The Acer C720 Chromebook line has been praised for its performance and battery life, and this new touch screen model allows us to address the needs of an even wider range of customers with exciting new capabilities," Acer CTO Arif Maskatia, said in a statement. "We're certain many holiday shoppers will jump at the chance to get a touch screen Chromebook for just $299.99."

Gionee Announces ELIFE E7 Handset In China

After unveiling the E6 on Indian shores a few months ago, Gionee is back with its latest new flagship Smartphone ELIFE E7. But this time around, the handset has been launched in China. It runs on an Android-based operating system with the AMIGO 2.0 UI, and is powered by a QUALCOMM snapdragon S800 chipset, on a 2.2 GHz quad-core processor. It packs in a 16 MP rear camera and 8 MP front camera (crisper selfies, anyone?), and boasts of "Largan M8 lens solution".
It features sports a 5.5" FHD (JDI) Display with 1080x1920 pixels at 401 ppi, protected by third-generation Gorilla Glass, which is twice as durable as the second generation of Gorilla Glass. The first version of the AMIGO voice assistant will support the Chinese language. The ELIFE E7 comes in both 3G and 4G variants. ELIFE E7 3G has a quad-core processor and it’s the world’s first smartphone to be equipped with the Qualcomm 8974AC version 2.5 GHz quad-core processor. E7 3G comes in two versions — WCDMA and TD-WCDMA. The GIONEE ELIFE E7 is likely to be available in India by early 2014. Gionee will also be launching E7 mini with a Mediatek octa-core chipset soon.
Specifications:
  • Single SIM.
  • 5.5" LTPS Ultra Bright display.

  • Android OS, V4.2.
  • Internal storage: 16 GB / 32 GB

Nokia Unveils Lumia 525 With 1 GB RAM

As we had reported earlier this month, Nokia has announced the successor of its highly-popular budget WP8 handset Lumia 520. Dubbed as the Nokia Lumia 525, the new phone packs in double the amount of RAM compared to its predecessor. With 1 GB of RAM, you can expect even high-end games such as Asphalt 8 and Modern Warfare 4 to work on the 525.
Apart from the RAM upgrade, the new phone is almost similar to the 520. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chipset with a 1 GHz dual-core CPU and Adreno 305 GPU. Other specs include a 5 megapixel auto-focus camera, 8 GB internal storage, and microSD card slot (up to 64 GB). However, if you were hoping to see a front-facing camera, you're in for some disappointment. Seriously, Nokia and Microsoft, why not make Skype available to more people?
Coming to the subject of software, the 525 runs Windows Phone 8 Update 3 out-of-the-box. Being a Lumia device, the phone comes with a set of exclusive apps including Photobeamer, HERE maps, Nokia Mix Radio (earlier known as Nokia Music), and Nokia Camera. Yes, it's the same camera app that we've seen on the Lumia 1020. That possibly explains why Nokia has opted for 1 GB of RAM. There's no official word on the device's pricing and availability in India, but considering that the Lumia 520 sells for around Rs 8000, you can expect to be priced at around 10-12k.

Apple iPad Decision

Today Apple announced its new iPad. Again this provides a lesson in decision making. With every Apple decision over the last decade, it will be criticized by many. The iPod was criticized because it would be just another music player. iTunes a was criticized because it was just another music store. The iPhone was criticized by many because Apple could not compete in the cell phone business. Apple apps were criticized because their value was not understood. The iPad is just a big iPod - that will be the criticism - too expensive, limited in media available, etc. But Steve Jobs, and Apple, can teach everyone valuable lessons in decision making.

These decisions were single decisions; they were a decision to go down a new path. Each of these was the launch of a new product line in a new market space, not just a product. There are two decision lessons here for businesses. The first is to look at strategic decisions like this as creating a new path, not just a single decision. A new path creates opportunities along the way - opportunities to launch new versions of the product and keep improving it. Apple kept improving the iPod, iTunes Store, and iPhone along the way, creating $12 billion in additional revenue. Businesses should approach strategic decisions a starting a journey on a new path and consider the opportunities it creates.

The other lesson is bold move decisions. Each of these new product lines was a bold move decision. Apple has grown because of bold moves decisions. Too many businesses fail to even consider bold move decisions, let alone have the courage to make them. To be successful in the future, businesses need to make bold move decisions! These are decision lessons that can also be used in personal decisions. Decide to create and entirely new path for your life, instead of just making individual decisions. Make bold move decisions that can reshape you life.

So look at the Apple iPad not just as a new product but as decision making lessons as well. Over its history, Apple also provided decision lessons in bad decision making, such as with the Newton. Steve Jobs learned from his good and bad strategic decisions and now is putting that experience to work. We can all learn from him too.

It is powered by a MTK 6589 turbo quad-core 1.5 GHz chip, 1 GB of DDR3 RAM, and is 3G/HSPA-enabled. Lava Rolls Out A Budget 4.5" Smartphone - Iris 456

Lava that has rolled out a budget handset Iris 456 in the market. The phone sports a sensibly sized 4.5" IPS screen with 480x854 pixels. Inside is a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor along with 512 MB of RAM. We don't think that the amount of RAM is sufficient to run Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) smoothly, but still much better than the good for nothing Android phones with 256 MB RAM.
As you'd expect from a domestic manufacturer, the handset offers dual-SIM functionality. Moving onto its optics, the phone features a 5 megapixel camera coupled with an LED flash. Apart from that, you get a 1.3 MP  front-facing camera for selfies, 4 GB internal storage, microSD card slot, Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth, A-GPS, and 1650 mAh battery.
The Lava Iris 456 is up for purchase for Rs 7000. Needless to say, the phone competes with the recently launched Canvas Juice and Lumia 520 which are priced just 1K higher. Of the two, the Canvas Juice's USP is its 3000 mAh battery and also has 1 GB RAM, while the 520 excels in terms of user-experience. On the other hand, I don't see the Iris 456 bring anything interesting to the tablet.
Specifications:
  • 4.5" IPS screen with pixel dimensions of 480x854.
  • 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 512 MB of RAM.
  • 5 megapixel camera with LED flash.
  • 1.3 MP front-facing camera.
  • 4 GB internal storage, MicroSD card slot.
  • 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and A-GPS.
  • Dual-SIM (GSM), Supports 3G.
  • Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean).
  • 1650 mAh battery

Eric Schmidt Teaches Users How To Port From iOS To Android

Google’s Eric Schmidt is back. No, he’s trying to prove to us again how safe Android really is. This time around he’s hitting three birds with one stone — upping sales of high-end Android handsets, trying hard to make Apple loyalists switch over to the Android platform, and at the same time drive more traffic to Google+.
Google’s chairman has taken it upon himself to pull iOS fans onto the Android bandwagon, with a “how to switch guide”, via Google+. The guide is quite comprehensive, and will come in handy for those who really do want to take the plunge. Check out the post here.
Taking advantage of the US holiday season, Schmidt posts: “Many of my iPhone friends are converting to Android.  The latest high-end phones from Samsung (Galaxy S4), Motorola (Verizon Droid Ultra) and the Nexus 5 (for AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile) have better screens, are faster, and have a much more intuitive interface.  They are a great Christmas present to an iPhone user!”
After such an amazing opening statement, his subsequent paragraph is laughable to say the least. “Here are the steps I recommend to make this switch.  Like the people who moved from PCs to Macs and never switched back, you will switch from iPhone to Android and never switch back as everything will be in the cloud, backed up, and there are so many choices for you. 80% of the world, in the latest surveys, agrees on Android”. Why on earth would people using MACs, switch to a non-compatible platform without a forethought?
A few months back Microsoft tried something similar for its US-based customers, to woo them to switch from Android to the Windows Phone platform with the Switch to Windows Phone. How far these tactics go in wooing users, only time will tell.

Google Nexus 5 Sell Like Hotcakes

The high-end LG Google Nexus 5 has been selling like hotcakes in India apparently; so much so that despite the official price tag being Rs 29,000, it is still selling for Rs 32,000 (16GB) in the grey market, as soon as they go out of stock on Play Store India. Apple, this is the way you should be selling iPhone 5C, not with ridiculous prices and hare-brained exchange schemes.
The Nexus 5 does have a lot of things going for it, mainly the high-end hardware with mainstream pricing, however, there are niggling audio issues with the device which shouldn’t be the case in this day and age. And this is what LG and Google can certainly learn from Apple.
Angry users have been complaining in Google’s product forums regarding “Low Input Volume (gain) using Headsets w/ Inline Mics”, while Information Week confirms the issue with their tests and has listed workarounds. Thankfully Google is aware of this issue and has promised to fix it as soon as possible.
